      4. The Yumi's Sweet Potato and Cashew one has eggs in it :(

        "AVAILABLE IN: 200g & 2kg

INGREDIENTS: Sweet Potato (45%), Roasted Cashews (15%), Vegetable Oil, Vinegar, Water, Fresh Coriander, Eggs, Brown Sugar, Garlic, Salt, Spices, Preservatives (202, 211).
MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF FISH and SESAME SEEDS."

      5. Oh and so does the Kalamata Olive one:

"INGREDIENTS: Kalamata Olives (30%0, Green Olive, Vegetable Oil, Eggs, Vinegar, Sugar, Salt, Spices, Acidity Regultor (330)."

However, there are heaps that are vegan! As listed in the above list. It is great that there are so many vegan types from that brand :)

    2. Maddi,
I just emailed you but I thought of another couple of sweet additions; Arnott's lemon crisp biccies, weis fruit sorbet, some of the aeroplane jellies!

And I am pretty sure that the strawberry oreos that you listed may not be vegan? i will check next time I am there.

Thank you again for you great list. I will keep emailing you any from woolies and coles that I think of.

A big thank you to you for all of your emails and FB messages! It has really helped the list. I haven't added everything from your emails but I will do so in the morning. It is 10:58pm here and my eyes are way too sore from looking at the computer screen to continue typing. Will add them all in the morning. Feel free to keep adding to the list. Thanks again :)

    4. Oh wow, is Nesquik vegan there? It wasn't over here last time I checked, but I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it. We're also avoiding palm oil at the moment because of all the issues with that, so a lot of our favourite vegan products are out now :(

      1. Hi Natasha! I didn't see palm oil in the ingredients but please tell me if I need to take anything off of the list! :) Thanks! Oh, and feel free to add to it too

      2. We don't get most of these products in South Africa, but Fry's is from here. There's palm oil in the puff pastry for their pies. The ingredients only say vegetable oil, but I asked them and it's palm oil. I loved those pies :(

The Oreos here also have palm oil, I don't know if they're the same all over. Ours used to have milk in and now they're vegan, but we still can't eat them.

There's some new vegan companies that are going to have their food available in our area soon, so I'm very excited.

      3. I will check them out. I didn't see palm oil in our oreos last time I checked but I will look again soon!! :)

Seems like products are different in each country! How strange.

        Thanks for the info!

      4. Hi,
Sorry I had no other way of writing this message, without being anonymous . As I don't have anything listed. My question is.... Can someone please confirm if the ingredients of this cereal is vegan friendly. Also what are sulphites and is it vegan friendly?

      5. Hi Paul,

It looks vegan to me. Although, if you are really worried it is probably best to contact the company.

Sulfites are chemical compounds found naturally in grapes, garlic and other plants. Sulfites are used as a food preservative or enhancer.

        Hope this helps :)

      6. Hi Madison, thanks for this list, it is great! Just with reference to your comment above, Oreos have palm oil in them. Palm oil is usually listed as "vegetable oil" in most product packaging.

      7. Hi Sylvia. Thank you. Will remove them now!

        Delete
      8. Hi Madison, love your blog! Well, the Oreos are still vegan because they contain no animal products, but they contain palm oil. So it really depends on what you class as vegan (or not...). I would leave them on the list... for those who are new vegans might appreciate it. PS: Your list led me to buy Sanitarium So Good Chocolate ice cream.... OMGosh! Thank yoU!!!!! I haven't had ice cream since going veggie! <3

    5. Maggi 2 minute noodles (and other noodle brands like Fantastic, Trident, Mi Goreng) flavour sachets contain E631, an additive derived from animal products. So they are not vegan. I recommend buying a pack of plain noodles (Fantastic brand sell a big bulk packet with no flavour sachets)and cooking them with some Massel veggie stock instead.

      ReplyDelete
      Replies
      1. E631 can also be derived from plant starch, what we really should be doing is asking food label authorities to legislate some kind of indicator for plant-derived and animal-derived ingredients. This would be welcomed by not only vegans and vegetarians, but people of various religious faiths, and people with food intolerances, so the benefits would be very widespread.

        Delete
      2. I have confirmation from Maggi that the 631 they use in 2 minute noodles is plant derived, making them vegan. They can send you a list of vegan friendly items if you ask for it (they also have a vegetarian friendly list which was sent by mistake)

just wanted to say that the sanitarium snitzels now contain egg white :( also, you could add to the list: arnotts choc ripple biscuits and praise lite dijonaise

      3. Sadly Arnott's still use palm oil in their biscuits, pretty much any time you see an unspecified vegetable oil in an ingredients list it will be palm oil, particularly when the product has greater than negligible levels of saturated fat. http://www.orangutan.org.au/palm-oil has some good tips on how to spot palm oil in products, they claim that about half of Australian food products use it.

      1. Hello Nina! I will check when I go to the grocery store next. These are the ingredients of the chocolate nesquik:

        INGREDIENTS:
SUGAR, COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, SOY LECITHIN, CARRAGEENAN, SALT, ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, SPICE. VITAMINS AND MINERALS: CALCIUM CARBONATE, ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), ZINC OXIDE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6), COPPER GLUCONATE, MANGANESE

To me it looks vegan? But I will double check in the store too! :) Thanks so much. Please feel free to keep adding and removing to the list!

    12. It's always handy to have lists like these, but at first glance there are a couple of clarifications that should probably be made. Kellogg's coco pops are no longer vegan, as they contain lanolin-based vitamin D, and I'm fairly certain that their whole range is questionable considering a search for 'vegan' products on their website turns up zero results!

Also, with the frosty fruits you should probably make it clear that only the tropical ones (not sure of their actual name) are vegan, as the watermelon and lemon, lime and bitters ones both contain 120 :(

      Hope this helps! :)

Fantastic blog you have here! I stumbled across it one day and have been hooked since! : )

Just thought I should mention Yumi's eggplant dips have egg in them. Surprising and kind of unnecessary, I believe! Not 100% sure about the eggplant & zaatar as I haven't actually seen that one before, but the Mediterranean definitely does.

    14. The La Zuppa soup range at Coles has some vegan soups: Tuscan Vegetable, Spinach & Chickpea, Minestrone, Moroccan Pumpkin & Chickpea, and Pumpkin. They used to have a lentil one too but they don't seem to make that any more.

Some of their soups are at Woolworths too - I've seen the Moroccan Pumpkin & Chickpea one there.

I don't know if you know but unfortunately Mentos aren't vegan..

I noticed you put skittles under the lollies section, assuming most people are vegan due to the poor treatment of animals I would like to point out that the Mars company, responsible for skittles, are notorious for hideous animal testing. I would suggest having a read of the below link if you'd like more information because I personally do not consider them vegan at all, just like cosmetics that are tested on animals are not vegan.

    26. Coles brand corn chips might be vegan but idk if they use palm oil. i would hope not. LEDA do milk arrowroot bickies now but so far I can only find them at IGA. La Zuppa rustic veggie soup is also vegan but not sure if that stuff is stocked in Coles, my local Coles stores don't stock it. Greens maple-flavoured syrup is vegan and they stock it pretty much everywhere. Amantoth jams are vegan too, I love the strawberry one.

My partner and I tried the simply coconut and coconut and mango variety on the weekend and loved them. Available from Coles and Woolworths :) Tam

    37. Hi, just want to say this site is BRILLIANT. I'm considering veganism but one of my concerns was how complicated it looked having to go through every single thing I ate to check it was vegan friendly. A list like this, specific to supermarkets as well? Abso-bloody-lutely perfect. THANK YOU so much! Do you think you could do a post about common everyday non-vegan things we should be aware of? Like leather boots? Or a make up line that uses animal testing?

      xx, love, Jess

      ReplyDelete
    41. Emulsifiers 471 and 477 are usually derived from animal products unless indicated it comes from something such as Soy.
The Sanitarium So Good Ice Creams you listed have these ingredients. Coles even lists them as containing milk through their online shopping.

All vegans should look up any words they are not familiar with.
Also, certain company brands are notorious for animal cruelty such as testing, as indicated in another comment referring to companies such as Mars. Buyer beware.

Btw, thanks so much for taking the time to make this list. It's great someone took the time out to make it easier for vegans, especially newbies.

      1. Hi Prash. Palm oil is a vegan product but as most vegans are very ethically conscious they avoid it as the forests which home the orangutans are quickly being destroyed, along with the orangutangs, just so more palm oil crops can be grown.
