Vegan Cheese Reviews

I have been searching for a long time to find some vegan cheeses that are yummy, reasonably priced and full of flavour. I found that the ones from our local supermarkets either tasted really bland or were called "Soy Cheese" but had contained dairy protein. So, I am on a quest to find the perfect vegan cheese. I will keep trying new ones and posting the reviews here for you! Hopefully, it will help you find some tasty vegan cheeses without the hassle and cost of trying heaps of different brands and types. :)

I really enjoyed Cheezly. It has a dry, kind of processed taste to it but was still really yummy. It reminds me of the individually packaged children's cheeses that you can buy. I will definitely buy this again. I tried to melt it on enchiladas and pizzas but it didn't really melt... although, once heated it still tastes yummy. It is best eaten on its own or in sandwiches and wraps.

Price: $7 AUD
Where: Mrs Flannery's (Australia)
Use: Cheddar cheese replacement, best for eating on its own, sandwiches/wraps, salads etc... (best uncooked)
Pros: Vegan, palm oil free, gluten free, easy to slice, yummy flavour.
Cons: Expensive, quite dry
Rating: 7/10

This is a yummy soy cheese... It is a creamy 'cheese' spread that is so soft and delicious. The herbs and chives flavour is amazing on sandwiches/wraps and also chunks as a pizza topping. I will definitely continue using this one.

Price: $6 AUD
Where: Mrs Flannery's (Australia)
Use: Cream cheese replacement, best on wraps/sandwiches, salads, as a pizza topping etc...
Pros: Vegan, really creamy, easy to spread, nice taste.
Cons: Price
Rating: 8/10
Link: Tofutti

This tastes really similar to the Toffuti herbs and chives cream cheese but without the herbs and yummy flavour. It has a soy-ish taste and is quite bland. I wouldn't eat it on its own but it would be very handy in replacement of normal cream cheeses when incorporating it into a recipe such as in dips.

Price: $5.00 AUD
Where: Coles (Australia)
Use: Cream cheese replacement, Best used in recipes, good for dips etc...
Pros: Vegan, cheap, easy to buy, good price for a large container
Cons: Bland flavour
Rating: 7/10
Link: King Land

  2. We also get Cheezly in Switzerland. It tastes okay but I think the consistency is a little weird? I don't like that it is super hard to melt.

The absolute best cheese is Daiya cheese! I tried some on my last trip to the USA and it is incredible. The cheddar one tastes just like normal cheddar. Really good. Sadly we don't have it in here yet...

    1. Hello! I like Cheezly... but you are right. It is hard to melt. You can buy mozzarella versions that are made for the purpose of melting. I haven't tried those yet.

Daiya cheese? I haven't tried that one yet. I would love to try it!! So exciting trying new vegan cheeses.

    2. Daiya shreds is the best I've had so far. It's really good on pizza and nachos and grilled cheese. Even better, they came out with Daiya wedges, which is even better - Havarti garlic/jalapeno is cracker-worthy. My friends and I couldn't stop eating it. My mouth is usually afraid of vegan cheese but it was pleasantly surprised with the Daiya wedges. They also make cheddar and jack, which got lukewarm reviews but I think they're also good - just not as good as the Havarti.

    4. Hi, Sorry to say but BEWARE as Daiya block and slices are made with Palm Oil from Brazil AND worse still have Titanium Dioxide as a listed ingredient ( a mineral used in paints for white colour). You can confirm this in the QA section on the Daiya website and commonly known when I lived in the USA. They say that their Shreds use different ingredients but how can you trust them? We love the new My Life Biocheese! Yummy taste and melt and made from Coconut oil ....Hope this helps...

  3. Hi Madison - love your blog!

Have you tried vegusto no-moo cheese yet? Its only recently avaliable in Oz, and the piquant one is quite deightful (for a vegan cheese). Its the only vegan cheese I've eaten so far that I've actually enjoyed raw, (other than those I've made myself using Jo Stepaniak's Uncheese cookbook). Comes omni approved from my household too ;).

Notzarella is pretty good too, if a little bland - but then it is meant to be like motzerella so...I like it on pizzas!

You can get both online or from health food stores.

Thanks so much. I have not heard of either of those! I am very intrigued. I am so excited to try new things. Thanks so much for sharing. I now have something new to research, purchase and try! Weeeeee! I really like the idea of the Notzarella. :)

  4. The IGA at Blaxland in the lower Blue Mountains, NSW, stocks some of the Sheese range (http://www.buteisland.com/). They also have a couple of melty varieties. Their website lists a couple of online suppliers in Australia. They're worth trying.

We love the plain Tofutti Better Than Cream Cheese out of which I've made icing for vegan cupcakes, as well as the best baked vegan cheese cake ever.

    PS, love your blog :)

  6. Keep an eye out for Tofutti "American flavour" soy cheese slices… I've bought them in either Coles or Woolies (can't remember which), and they are excellent. They melt properly & taste delicious in toasted wraps.

  8. I use vegusto golden cheese as it has no carrageenan in it and it is yummy :) although I have nothing to compare to as its the only vegan cheese I have tried, but you should try it, I'm in the UK and get it from a vegan, organic, health food store :)
    Btw you're site is wonderful!

  12. I know most people like Daiya, and I love their JalapeƱo Havarti, but my favorite is Follow Your Heart. I am in the U.S., and I don't know if they are worldwide or not. Tofutti is great too.
