Vegan Chocolate Brownie Recipe

If there was one regular recipe request Jerome and I received from Veggieful viewers, it would be for a delicious vegan brownie recipe. Now, not only are these chocolatey, 'moist' (ew, weird word), luscious and crazily decadent, but even the brownie-hating Jerome loves them! To be honest, we had to make two batches of these to photograph. After I made up this recipe and loved it, we made another batch for photography purposes. However, over the day, we kept taking little nibbles at it until it was all gone! WE ATE A WHOLE BATCH OF BROWNIES! We felt so guilty after that and said "We better make another batch" through our chocolate-covered teeth. So, the point of this story is that they are so amazing and so yummy! The white chocolate chips add a creamy consistency and that extra chocolatey-ness! So for the chocoholics out there, this is for you!  :)

I use the Australian metric system. So, 1 cup = 250ml and 1 tablespoon = 20ml.

makes 15

   1 ½ cups all-purpose (plain) flour
   pinch salt
   1 tightly-packed cup brown sugar
   1 teaspoon baking powder
   ½ cup cocoa powder
   90g dark chocolate, melted
½ cup margarine, at room temp.
   1 cup
Soy Milky Lite
   1 teaspoon vanilla extract
   100g vegan white chocolate chips

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 F) and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. In a bowl, add the flour, salt, sugar, baking powder and cocoa and stir until combined.
  3. Pour in the dark chocolate, margarine, soymilk and vanilla to the bowl and beat for a couple of  minutes or so until the mixture becomes creamy and fully combined (Use electric beaters if you have them). The mixture should be thick and shiny at this point.
  4. Fold in the white chocolate chips until they are roughly distributed.
  5. Pour/spoon in the brownie mixture into the baking tray and smooth the top.
  6. Bake for 30 minutes or so until the top looks cooked and a skewer comes out clean when poked into the centre of the brownies.
  7. Cool for 15 minutes before serving or slicing. This allows it to set completely in the centre.
  8. Serve immediately or refrigerate until needed.

  • I find that the brownies get sweeter, the colder they get. I like to warm it up before I eat it, which makes it a little bit less sweet for some reason.
  • If you are in Australia, I buy the Sweet William brand of White Chocolate and cut into chips. You can purchase it from Coles or Woolworths.

The nutrition information above is an approximate guideline.

  6. hey madison, i def have to try this!! it looks amazing :) do you think i could sub the margerine and use coconut oil instead? i try to avoid margerine as it's not as healthy as they claim it to be :)

also, do you know of any dark chocolate chips that are available in australia that are vegan? i do the same as you and break up dark (milk free) choccy into small bits but i'd love some pre-made chips, they would look so much better in choc chip cookies etc !havent been able too find them in the supermarket as yet

    thanks :)

    1. Hi Jess!

Thanks for your comment. You could try it, yes! Please tell me how it goes because I would love to have an alternative.

I don't normally buy dark chocolate chips. I buy a block of dark 70% cocoa chocolate and break it up. However, Sweet William sells milk chocolate chips that you can purchase from Coles and Woolworths in the health food section :) Hope this helps!

    2. oh wow i didn't know that they do chips!
i live in adelaide and haven't seen them at my local woolies and coles. thanks for letting me know though, i'll look around :)

yeah i used to use margerine regularly until i found out about hydrogenated oils - not very good for us at all!! you can get an omega type spread by melrose from health stores, that's a better alternative, although a little more expensive.
i will try with coconut oil and get back to you. xxx thanks for this amazing blog. you and i have very similar tastes, lucky me :)

    3. Thanks Jess! There are lots of healthier margarines at your local health food stores. I have actually seen a coconut oil "margarine"! I am yet to try it :) Thanks. I hope you enjoy these!

    4. Hi Jess,
A vegan grocer in Brisbane called The Green Edge sells premium quality vegan choc chips suitable for cooking (or eating straight out of the bag). I don't remember the name of the brand but you can contact them online, and also buy their products online. Also, Lindt dessert cooking chocolate appears to be vegan, and is in the baking section of the major supermarkets with the other brands of cooking chocolate.

  8. These are so yummy! I added applesauce to the recipie and it really helped hold the brownies together and prevent them from being too crumbly! Thanks for the delicious brownie recipe!

    1. They are the nicest brownies every and not at all crumbly. They were so chocolatey and dense. There is no way you would waste apple sauce in them.

  9. Hi :) What sized pan did did you make these in? I never have any luck with making browines and I thought I'd better make sure I use the proper size before giving these a try!

    They look so yummy!

  13. My brownies turned out more like a cake. What kind of texture should they be after they set?

  14. Just made these and they turned out lovely! I replaced the white chocolate chips with a variety of nuts (to try and convince myself that they weren't too unhealthy) and they are really tasty. Thanks for the recipe! :)
