Vegan Split Pea Soup Recipe

When I was little I loved pea and ham soup but haven't eaten anything similar since becoming vegan. However, I want to introduce you to the most amazing bowl of soup in the world. This soup tastes EXACTLY like pea and ham soup but is vegan! It is amazing. Jerome and I couldn't believe how delicious the soup was and the crazy depth of smoky flavour. I always thought that it was the meat in pea and ham soup that gave it that smoky flavour but it is the split peas! You would never even know that this was a different recipe. After we ate this, I called my mum up straight away and told her that she had to make it right away... and she did! She made it for herself and my stepdad in the pressure cooker and they couldn't believe it! I guarantee that there will be a flavoursome party in your mouth when you eat this and your family and friends will definitely be impressed. Have a go and tell me what you think. Enjoy!

serves 6

   1 tablespoon oil
1 leek, pale and light green part thinly sliced

   2 garlic cloves, crushed
   1 cup diced carrot
   1 cup diced potato
   1 cup green split peas
   1 cup yellow split peas
   1 teaspoon "smoked" paprika
   10 cups low-sodium veggie stock
   thyme leaves from 2 sprigs
   freshly cracked black pepper

  1. Rinse the split peas under running water and drain. Set aside.
  2. In a large pot on high heat, add the oil, leek and garlic and sauté for a couple of minutes until fragrant.
  3. Add in the carrot and potato and sauté for a couple of minutes.
  4. Add the split peas and "smoked"paprika and stir until combined.
  5. Pour in the vegetable stock and stir.
  6. Bring to the boil and then turn the heat down to a slow simmer.
  7. Add in the thyme leaves and freshly cracked black pepper.
  8. Simmer for 50 minutes to 1 hour UNCOVERED stirring occasionally until the split peas have begun to break down and the soup has become thick. Add more stock for a thinner soup.
  9. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

  • You must use "smoked"paprika. It is different to normal paprika and gives the soup that extra bit of smokiness.

The nutrition information above is an approximate guideline. One serving of this amazing bowl of soup contains 72% of your recommended daily intake of vitamin A and 20% of your RDI of iron. It also contains no cholesterol, is very high in dietary fiber, high in manganese, high in protein and high in thiamin.

    1. Hello! I don't actually use a pressure cooker. My mum has just bought it and she is just using trial and error at the moment. I will look into more pressure cooker recipes in the future for you!

  5. Hi Madison can I make it with only green split peas?

  6. I eat a lot of soups (especially in the winter) and we go through a LOT of smoked paprika. It gives a real smoky flavour to everything that you add it into. We used to buy liquid smoke but the paprika adds another element and so we stopped buying it. Cheers for the recipe for tonight's tea :)

  7. I'm making this tonight and I'm just wondering if the 10 cups of stock is correct as mine has been cooking for an hour and it's still very thin. I made your Asparagus and leek soup last night and it was very very nice. Thank you.

    1. Hi there! Yes it is correct as split peas take a long time to cook and soak up a lot of liquid. Do you have the pot uncovered? Because covering it will prevent evaporation of liquid :)

    2. oh was the pot supposed to be uncovered? I had mine simmering in a covered pot. It still tasted very nice but was too thin even after 2 hours simmering.

    3. Oh no! I have added the word 'uncovered' in the instructions now. I hope that you still enjoyed it :)
