    2. Hi Madison

      Great list thankyou so much..
I have just been into woolies to buy sweets fjor my sons vegan birthday party
so i would like to up date a couple of things :)

Woolies discontinued Lays crisps so they need to all go.

Kettle Salt & vinigar are Vegan also the Chilli flavour.

There is a new smack out called POPCORNERS you find them in the crisp isle and its a cross between a crisp and popcorn...Sweet & savoury also Sea salt flavour

For the biscuit isle :) you also have Arnotts Raspberry Shortcake (The gelling agent in it is pectin which is safe)

      Sweety isle now...

      Allens Jelly Beans!! :D

Couldnt find the X Tream sour straps in there so dont know if they still sell them , however the homebrand Sour straps are vegan

101 Rainbow Straws (pkt of mini straws with sherbert in them) are VEGAAANNN :) :)

      hope this has been helpful

oh and by the way Oreos and macro choc biscuits have palm oil in them, so you may want to get rid of them :)

    3. Hi Kara! Thanks so much for your list! I am definitely going to add all of your wonderful findings now. Thanks! :)

    4. Allens jelly beans (in NZ anyway) have cochineal (E120) in them, so they aren't vegan. Not sure if it's likely to be different over there...

      Delete
    5. Wonka long lasting gob stobbers (only the long lasting ones) are vegan too!

    6. Mentos are vegan! They don't have gelatin in them :)

  4. Is it just me, or have they recently cut their range of available tofu? I can only find one brand of plain tofu at Woolworths anymore, which is usually sold out, and a couple of varieties of pre-flavoured tofu, which I'm not really interested in buying.

    1. Hello! Yes I know! I have noticed the same thing. Last time I was there they had removed the whole tofu section and had replaced it with cheese :| I hope that they bring it back. I have been going to Coles for tofu now. Coles has a massive vegetarian/vegan section and the tofu is so much cheaper! :)

      Delete
    2. They are in the process of removing all the independent brands and Woolworths own brand has started to appear on the shelves. Haven't tried any of it yet.

      Delete
    3. Hi Lyndall,
Thanks for the insight. So they are bringing out their own brand of tofu? :)

      Delete
    4. Woolies have bought back tofu, but only in the macro range. I now go to my local Asian grocery where tofu is about $4.50 for 900g, bunches of corriander and basil are about $1.20 each - what a bargain!!

    5. There are two lines - the "Marcro" brand is not organic, but the "Marcro Organic" (purple labels) is organic. To avoid GM go organic. There is another issue to consider though.

      http://healthnews.benabraham.com/html/soy_products_adverse_effects.html
      http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/NaturalFood/Soy.aspx
      http://www.healingdaily.com/detoxification-diet/soy.htm

I went into easting soy SOME went I went all organic (and instantly lost 45 pounds and stopped having Reactive-Hypoglycemia). However in those days I lived in the states, and I had organic meat options. When I moved to Australia (having for years eaten Aussie organic products) those many years ago - I was already on an all organic diet, and having lived in the USA where the conventional meat is all tainted with antibiotics and hormones (and metabolites from agro poisons and bad feeds) I would not eat meat I knew was not safe.

Trouble was, nearly all the organic food produces in OZ back in those days, (a huge amount compared to most nations) was sold (usually the entire farm) to other nations. It never saw Aussie shelves. Organic meat was very hard to get. I wasn't into soy though I could make a very yummy spicy tofu. But I needed protein. Over that same time period of soy in 2/3ds of my major meals, I also wound up with blood that was very thick and clumping, mental issues easily as bad as as Alzheimer's dementia, symptoms similar to parkinsons (very low dopamine levels), brain hormone disruption, hypothyroidism that was resistant to all hormone treatments (at times I had all the symptoms present, but high levels of the hormones - which could not be used), I suddenly stopped all testosterone production, had sperm production, had massive muscle wasting, etc etc - and it just happens that *all* of these odd things (which made me officially disabled and in massive pain as of 2000) are ALSO well documented as known effects from eating a diet with more than a TINY amount of unfermented soy in it.

      TOFU = BAD
TEMPE, MISO, TAMARI, SHOU = GOOD
      TVP = chemical contamination

It just a plain advertising myth that soy is a wonder food, a health choice, etc. It is a myth that Asians eat massive amounts of soy. Most of what they get is fermented (not the same) and it in very small amounts (less that US carnivorous get in their burgers).

It is important to note that soy is*not* the safe food we were told it was -as it was a marketing ply. We were all lied to. We have all been targeted with hype to sell product to get us to eat it. Soy is associated with a lot of serious health problems. It does not stop cancer, it creates it.

    2. Ive looked at the original digestive biscuit packet from coles and the ingredients look all vegan to me, but when i googled it lots of results said original digestive biscuits aren't vegan and now I'm freaking out?! IS it just that the Aussie ones are vegan and international recipes aren't? Or are they all not vegan?!

  7. Hi,

Like you, I also use Nutrisoy Organic Tofu and was concerned when it disappeared form the shelves a few weeks ago. After weeks with no tofu available the shelves have now been filled with only Woolworths brand Macro tofu. After a call to Woolworths Customer Service it was confirmed that they have deleted the range and will no longer be stocking all the tofu brands they used to. I was told it was a "business decision" to only stock their own brand of tofu. As tofu is a core nutritional product for vegans and vegetarians I am devastated to hear that Woolworths has reduced it's range of tofu to only its own brand :(

    1. Oh wow! Thanks Rachel for the information. That is really good to know but also very annoying. Looks like I will have to start buying my Nutrisoy tofu from Coles :) Thank you!

    1. Just to clarify, the Oreo biscuits sold in Australia through Woolworths are not vegan. The Oreo biscuits that are made in the USA are the vegan-friendly version. You can find these in some other grocery stores Australia.

There are also a few other items on your lists that are also not vegan (vegetarian, yes).

Woolworths Macro range has recently added some vegan-friendly products to their range in the fridge section.

      Good list though.

  11. Hi, I think you will find Mentos will be made with or without gelatin, depending on where in the world they are made :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't see gelatin listed as an ingredient in Mentos.

I have seen some Muslim halal food sites that say Mentos contain pig gelatin, but apparently the gelan gum in Mentos is not from gelatin, but is vegan. What are your thoughts?

    Cheers,

    Jeff

    1. Hi Jeff,
it seems that some Mentos flavours use gellan gum instead of gelatin. The mint mentos and fruit mentos are the two that I could see that use gellan gum. However, it stated on the packets that they all use beeswax as a glazing agent. So it is really a personal choice :)
      Thanks!

  16. Hi Madison,

Great list! Thanks for your efforts :)

I just wanted to add to your list a little:

Smooze Ice Blocks - available on the shelf to be frozen at home
Raffertys Garden LB1 Ice Blocks - available on the shelf
Slendier Slim Pasta - health food section - made from konjac vegetable
McCains Pizza Bases - frozen box of 3

That's all I can think of right now, but I'll give it some additional thought later on.

Also, Nuttelex contains palm oil, so you may wish to remove it from your vegan list. They claim that it's "ethically sourced" but have provided no evidence of this claim, and Nuttelex has not been included in the list of sustainably-grown palm oil companies on Ethical Consumer: http://www.ethicalconsumer.org/shoppingethically/palmoilfreelist.aspx.

I've ditched it in favour of the Macro Soy Spread.

    1. My pleasure. Please get back to me and tell me which ones are vegan and if they still are. I bought them in the past so hopefully they haven't changed them. The only thing I could suggest is to purchase the little asian jelly in the individual containers in the Asian section. I think they might be Panda brand??? Most of them are vegan!! Or, purchase agar powder and make your own jelly :) Good luck with your wisdom teeth!

  31. And as always, new vegans or people that are buying for vegans should note that the Woolworths soy cheeses all contain Casein and "natural cheese flavours". My wife bought some for our 1st anniversary and was upset when I told her that I wouldn't eat it.

Ah well. Calling it "soy cheese" is just rather misleading.

But I don't mind driving out of my way to a Mrs Flannery's or the like!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Taylah! Thanks for your comment. I know... it really sucks. I bought a soy cheese from Woolworths about 1 year ago and realised it contained Casein and was so annoyed!! It definitely is misleading.

I love Mrs Flannery's. They stock such an amazing range of vegan cheeses!

  32. Hi Madison! Great site, I am currently switching over from vegetarian to vegan and all your info, plus the info in the comments from others, has really helped! I live in regional South Australia in a small town and it is extremely difficult to source vegan products; we don't have any types of vegan cheese in any of the shops here whatsoever. I found a website called Vegan Perfection (top result if you google it) which will ship vegan products (including soy-free alternatives for vegans who can't have soy) anywhere in Australia. I just thought it might be helpful for anyone in a similar situation to myself who also uses your informative site.
    Thanks!

  33. this is such a wonderful site thank you, my daughter has actually sent me the link to your site and I am so happy I am upset however about Woolworths Soy Cheese! feeling ripped off, my husband bought it for me and I didn't check the label, won't be having that anymore, feel sick that I have eaten it. Also about Oreos, some Woolworths do actually sell the vegan ones, you just need to check every time you buy them, it's as if sometimes they import from the USA (vegan) and other times from the UK (has milk solids) weird but true as my Woolies sells vegan ones and I know of some Woolies in Hobart selling them too. thanks again for a wonderful site xx

    1. Hi Linda,
Thanks so much. I am glad that you are enjoying Veggieful. I know... it is very annoying. I have had quite a lot of complaints about their soy cheese. I too did the same thing and bought it and tried it and felt so yucky that it wasn't vegan. I was very disappointed. Adding dairy really defeats the purpose of the product so I am not sure why?? Thanks for the information about oreos.

  34. Hey Guys!
I stumbled across this site as my first real introduction to "Vegan". I am hoping to gradually make the switch. I was hoping that you could help me and guide me on how to begin. And is it true that I will continue to loose weight undergoing this dietary change?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Stacey! Congrats on making the switch. My tips would be to follow some of our recipes and get used to vegan cooking. Find your favourite milk substitute, look at egg substitutes, read about the benefits of veganism and start having fun with cooking! :) Feel free to email us with any questions. One of the main benefits of veganism is that it allows you to control your weight and can help with weight loss. However, you still need to be eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly. But more importantly, you will be so much healthier inside... and most likely a lot happier too :)

  36. Hi Madison, just wanted to say I came across this site when trying to find out if Nanna's snack pies contained palm oil or not - yours was the only helpful site :) Thanks so much ! (I am jumping on the palm oil bandwagon, and am happy to say that most of the products I buy/consume do not contain palm oil). While I am not vegan, I found this site really useful, so thank you !

  37. hi. I'm only new to the whole vegan thing so I'm still learning. from what I could see the bean supreme vegetarian mince in sauce is vegan. I think a few of their other things are vegan but I know their sausages have egg whites.

  38. This is incredibly helpful! Thank you so much for sharing. It can be really hard to find yummy things as a vegetarian going on vegan, so this is excellent!

Fantastic job with your comprehensive list.
Just one to take off McVites Digestive Biscuits aren't vegan. They contain milk.
    Ingredients:

  47. Hi Madison,

Great list. I now keep it on the fridge so I can check it before going shopping. Would you consider adding that there is no Palm-Oil free soap in woolworths, but that EcoStore makes it with sustainable Palm Oil? I think soap is important enough to include on a vegan shopping list!

  52. Hi Madison,
Lindt Dark Chocolate definitely is not vegan. The label of both varieties you list says it contains butterfat. However, all the Whittakers chocolate that is 50% cocoa or greater is vegan - not just the 72% Ghana. I particularly like the Rum and Raisin, and the Dark Orange.

  82. Hi, I noticed you don't have any of the Macro veggie burgers up there :)
The quinoa veggie burgers have 'vegetables (potato, carrot, spinach), quinoa, chickpea meal, spice blend (rice flour, sugar, potato starch, dehydrated vegetables, (spinach, onion, garlic, tomato), salt, herbs, spice, spice extract (paprika oleoresin)), wheat flour, cumin, garlic'.

The Moroccan variety has 'vegetables (carrots, chickpeas, onion, broccoli, peas, corn, potato), breadcrumbs (wheat flour, water, wholemeal flour, maize flour, rye flour, yeast, iodised salt, wheat fibre, vitamins (thiamine, folate)), canola oil, garlic, spice blend (cumin, paprika), salt.

I'm new to this vegan stuff, but pretty sure that's all ok? (hopefully, because they are friggin delish). There are also a couple more varieties but I just haven't picked them up yet.

Could I add Marmite please? Yummy and very vegan http://marmite.co.nz/footer/faqs

Also the most ethical of the popular 'mites'. Vegemite is owned by Mondelez and Promite owned by Mars who both received red-ratings in the latest Shop Ethical guide (palm oil, child labour, animal testing etc). Marmite has a 100% green rating and they're owned by Sanitarium.

NB: Sanitarium is owned by 'Adventist Church SP' who are known for their strong anti-gay stance. Not particularly relevant to this page, but an interesting fact I learned recently :-)

  90. Don;t forget "Nutrisoy Organic tempe". Tempe is actually better for you that Tofu is (fermented foods and all that).

On hitch though...."Nutrisoy Organic Tofu" used to be very easy to source in the Adelaide hills (for well over a decade) but over the last year it has been very hard to obtain. We eat all organic for serious health reasons.

Coles (who used to be big on organics before the split with Meyer) stocks a rather limited organic & health food range now. What is off here is that they no longer stock Nutrisoy tofu, they do stock the Nutrisoy Tempe.

The organic shop in Mt Barker (Mt Barker Organics) has not been able to get "Nutrisoy Organic Tofu" either. Instead they have "Earth Source" which in my opinion is not of the same quality at all. The large package of Nutrisoy had/has the best texture.

The primary online source for this sort of food (organicbox) in the area, also stocks "Earth Source" instead of Nutrisoy, which makes me very suspicious that the lack of Nutrisoy tofu (but not tempe) is something being done by a major SA distributor. After all, "Nutrisoy" is still out there and doing fine, so there is no SANE reason for all the local shops to have stopped stocking their tofu in the same period... unless the people they all get it from no longer carry it.

  94. Great information and power to the people who take time in a myriad of ways to better the planet and give service to one another. On the topic of food goods and evils Woolies itself is a demon. I try to avoid it as much as possible and support the little people and the growers markets that directly support the farmers that Woolies cuts off at the knees. In an over busy life I do get sucked into the evil vortex of Woolworths from time to time but I never feel good about it
