Vegan Chocolate and Cherry Custard Tarts Recipe

Christmas is nearly here and I really felt like creating a festive dessert. Cherries really remind me of Christmas so it was only fair to create a delicious chocolatey dessert with the amazing flavour of cherry. Aren't cherries beautiful? They seriously make every dish look so festive and lovely without any effort. I have such fond memories of Christmas at home with my mum and kilos and kilos of cherries. We would have one massive bowl of cherries to our left and a bowl full of seeds and stems to the right. Our Chihuahua Tiffany would always try to eat the seeds... she was very naughty. Now, Jerome and I continue this tradition by devouring cherries every Christmas... our guinea pigs love them too! These tarts would also be an amazing party treat or dessert... not just for Christmas! Anyway, these are so decadent, rich and delicious and I guarantee that you will love these as much as we do!

makes: 20
total time: 15 minutes

Custard:
   2 tablespoons corn flour
   2 tablespoons white sugar
   2/3 cup Soy Milky Lite
   1/3 cup water
   2 tablespoons cocoa powder
   1 teaspoon vanilla essence
   20g dark chocolate (optional)*
   5 tablespoons cherry jam

Other:
20 mini vegan pastry tart shells
   20 cherries
   icing sugar, to garnish (optional)
grated dark chocolate, to garnish (optional)

  1. In a saucepan on medium to high heat, add all 'custard' ingredients except for the cherry jam.
  2. Whisk until combined and continue whisking for a couple of minutes until the custard has thickened.
  3. Take the saucepan off the heat and stir in the cherry jam until combined and the jam has melted through.
  4. Divide the custard between the pastry tarts.
  5. Top each tart with a cherry.
  6. Serve warm or refrigerate until set.
  7. Garnish with icing sugar or grated dark chocolate if desired. Enjoy!

  • *If you would like the tarts to be extra rich and chocolatey, you can add some dark chocolate. This may make it a little bit less sweet, more bitter and rich. Use a dark chocolate with 70% cocoa content or more.
  • I purchased vegan mini tart shells from the bakery section in Coles. Feel free to make your own by cutting out pieces of frozen pastry sheets and moulding them into mini muffin tins and baking them. Or, make them from scratch if you have the time.
  • If you cannot find cherry jam, you could always buy mixed berry jam or black forest jam.

The nutrition information above is an approximate guideline.
